Possui graduação em Historia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1989), mestrado em História Econômica pela Universidade de São Paulo (1995), doutorado em História Econômica pela Universidade de São Paulo (2001) e pós-doutorado pela University of Oxford (2003 e 2012-2013). Realizou estágios de pesquisa no Institute of Classical Studies Library, School of Advanced Studies, University of London; na Bibliothèque Gernet-Glotz, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales e na Bereichsbibliothek Altertumswissenschaften, Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg. Foi secretário geral (2000-2001) e presidente (2014-2015) da Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Clássicos (SBEC). Foi Pró-Reitor de Extensão (2005-2007) e Pró-Reitor de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação (2015-2017) da UFOP. Tem experiência na área de História, com ênfase em História Antiga, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: História Antiga, Roma Antiga, Sêneca, Tácito, Petrônio e Principado Romano.

I teach Ancient History at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Brazil, since 1991. I hold a PhD from the University of Sao Paulo in 2001. My Thesis is on Seneca and imperial politics and society (It was published, cf. "Publications" at this website). Since then I conducted post-doctoral work at Oxford (2003 and 2012-2013). Then I carried out research on different aspects of Early Imperial political history, especially the relationship between the imperial court, the senatorial aristocracy and literature.  My current research deals with Tacitus and the Principate, especially the reign of Nero, and I supervise students dealing with other authors from the same period.
