He is an elementary education teacher and holds a bachelor's degree in education from the Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación, UMCE, Chile. He earned his PhD in educational sciences from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Chile and completed his first postdoctoral stay at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. Later, Becas-Chile funded him to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Research for Teacher Education and Development, University of Alberta, Canada. Universities in Latin America, the United States, and Canada have extended invitations to him. He is the author of six books, as well as dozens of academic articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He is a board member and reviewer of scientific journals in Latin America and the United States. He has been the principal investigator in projects financed by national and international agencies. He is a research academic at the University of Los Lagos, Department of Education, and a coordinator of area teacher education for social justice at the Interuniversity Institute for Educational Research, IESED-Chile. IESED-Chile is an institute that collaborates with fourteen Chilean public universities. Currently, he is a visiting professor at the Universidad Federal de Ouro Preto, Brazil.
